Change Your Voicemail Greeting on iPhone

To change your voicemail greeting on iPhone, open the Phone app, then tap Calls, Edit, Edit Voicemail Greeting (Unified layout) or Voicemail, Greeting (Classic layout). Tap Custom, then Record, to replace the current greeting. There's no upload option, so play a studio-made greeting near the mic instead of typing a new one.

Before you start

Step by step

  1. Get your new greeting ready to play

    Have your studio-made greeting loaded as an MP3 on a laptop, tablet, or a second phone, with the volume already set to a comfortable level.

  2. Open the Edit Voicemail Greeting screen

    In the Unified layout, tap Calls, tap Edit, then tap Edit Voicemail Greeting. In the Classic layout, tap Voicemail, then tap Greeting.

  3. Tap Custom, then Record

    If Default is currently selected, tap Custom first. Tapping Record starts the new recording immediately and replaces whatever greeting was there before.

  4. Play the new greeting into the microphone

    Start playback on the other device right as you tap Record, holding it a few inches from the iPhone in a quiet room, then tap Stop when it ends.

  5. Play it back and confirm

    Tap Play to check the recording sounds clean. Re-record if you hear clipping or an echo, then leave the screen; iPhone saves it automatically.

  6. Test it with a real call

    Call your number from another phone and let it ring through to voicemail, so you hear the greeting exactly as callers will.

Tips

  • Re-record right away if a notification chimes mid-recording. iPhone doesn't offer a way to trim or edit after the fact.
  • If Custom is greyed out, confirm your carrier supports it or that Visual Voicemail is turned on under Settings, Apps, Phone.
  • Keep a copy of the MP3 on two devices in case one runs out of battery mid-recording.

Can I upload an MP3 as my iPhone voicemail greeting instead of recording it live?

No. Apple's Custom greeting only accepts a live recording through the iPhone's microphone. To use an MP3 you made elsewhere, play it from another device close to the mic while the iPhone records.

Why won't my new greeting save on iPhone?

Make sure you tapped Custom (not Default) before recording, and that you left the Greeting screen normally rather than force-closing the Phone app, which can discard the last recording.

Can I have different greetings for personal and business calls on one iPhone?

No, a single iPhone line has one voicemail greeting. Separate greetings need separate numbers, such as a second eSIM line or a business phone system with its own voicemail.

How long can an iPhone voicemail greeting be?

Apple's instructions don't state a maximum length. Keep it short anyway: 20 to 30 seconds covers a name, a short business message, and next steps without callers hanging up early.

Does changing my greeting delete my saved voicemail messages?

No. Recording a new greeting only replaces the outgoing message callers hear; it doesn't touch voicemail messages already saved in your Phone app or iCloud.
