How to Set Up Voicemail on iPhone

Open the Phone app, then tap Calls, Edit, Edit Voicemail Greeting (Unified layout) or Voicemail, Greeting (Classic layout). The first time, set a voicemail password, then choose Custom and tap Record. iPhone only records a greeting through the microphone: there is no option to upload an audio file.

Step by step

  1. Open the Phone app's voicemail greeting screen

    In the Unified layout, tap Calls, tap Edit, then tap Edit Voicemail Greeting. In the Classic layout, tap Voicemail, then tap Greeting. Check which layout you're on under Settings, Apps, Phone, if you're not sure.

  2. Set your voicemail password

    The first time you open Voicemail, iPhone asks you to create a password. Pick something you'll remember, since you'll need it again if you ever check messages by calling in from another phone.

  3. Choose Custom, then get ready to record

    Tap Custom instead of Default. Have your finished greeting ready to play from a laptop, tablet, or a second phone before you tap Record, since the recording starts immediately.

  4. Play your greeting into the microphone

    Tap Record, then immediately start playing your greeting from the other device, holding it a few inches from the iPhone's microphone in a quiet room. Tap Stop once it finishes.

  5. Review and save

    Tap Play to check the recording. If there's an echo, clipping, or background noise, tap Record and try again. Once it sounds right, leave the screen to save it.

  6. Call yourself to check the real thing

    From another phone, call your number and let it go to voicemail. Listening on an actual call is the only way to catch problems the Phone app's playback won't show.

Tips

  • Set the other device's volume to about 70 to 80 percent; too loud can clip and distort on the iPhone's mic.
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb on both phones first, so a call or notification doesn't interrupt the recording.
  • Re-record if you hear an echo: move the speaker a little farther from the mic and try a carpeted or furnished room instead of a bare one.

Can I upload an audio file as my iPhone voicemail greeting?

No. Apple's Custom greeting option only records through the iPhone's microphone; there is no upload button anywhere in the Phone app. Play a finished recording from another device next to the mic to get a studio-made greeting onto the phone.

What is the default voicemail greeting on iPhone?

If you don't record a Custom greeting, callers hear an automated announcement that reads back your phone number, along the lines of 'The person you are trying to reach is not available.'

How do I listen to my voicemail greeting before saving it?
