Putting your greeting on a cell phone: the play-and-record method
iPhone and Android voicemail can't take an uploaded file. Instead, play your MP3 aloud from a second device while your phone records a new greeting. Use a quiet room, hold the speaker close to your phone's microphone, press play as soon as recording starts, and listen back before you save.

- Your greeting MP3, downloaded to a computer, tablet or second phone.
- A quiet room.
- Your voicemail password, if your carrier asks for one.
How do I record it?
- Open your phone's voicemail greeting settings. The greeting guides show where they are on iPhone and Android.
- Choose Custom, and get ready to record.
- Hold the second device's speaker a few inches from your phone's microphone, at the bottom of the phone.
- Start recording on your phone, then press play on the greeting right away.
- Stop recording when the greeting ends.
- Play it back. If it's too quiet, too loud or cut off, record it again.
- Save it, then call your number from another phone to hear it.
How do I get a clean recording?
- Set the playing device to about three-quarters volume. Full volume can distort.
- Silence notifications on both devices, so no alert sound ends up in your greeting.
- Play from the device's own speaker. Bluetooth speakers can add a delay that cuts off the start.
What if I use a business phone system?
Business systems like Google Voice, Microsoft Teams and RingCentral take an uploaded file, so you don't need this method. See the setup guides.
